DHCP Server Discovery
2 minute read
Introduction
The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) network service automatically configures DHCP clients on a network. The Microsoft DHCP network service is integrated with Active Directory and performs automatic DNS registrations of these DHCP clients. In addition to configuring Microsoft DHCP servers, the goal is to capture client IPv4 configuration settings, IPv4 ranges and exclusions, and IPv4 server statistics.
General
For the successful discovery of Microsoft DHCP servers via the “DHCP” wizard, information must be entered in the input and selection fields provided. The selection of the Enterprise Gateway and the basic data as well as the possible and valid notations for domain, username, IP address, IP address ranges and hostname can be found in the Wizards manual.
“DHCP” Wizard
In the input area “Server name” IPv4 address, hostname or the fully qualified domain name of Windows servers with a DHCP service is to be entered. “Server name”, “Username” and “Password” always form a closed unit. A new line is inserted via the “New” button. After the job has been transferred to the Docusnap Enterprise Gateway, each entry is processed individually.
The “Search DHCP server” convenience function searches the Active Directory for registered DHCP servers and adds these systems to the server list. Alternatively, Windows servers can be imported into the server list using the “CSV Import” function. A corresponding template can be downloaded via the “i” symbol next to the “CSV Import” button. Further information can be found in the Wizard manual.
Discovery-DHCP.exe
Docusnap365 offers with the Discovery-DHCP.exe the possibility to obtain the information of a Microsoft DHCP server, without the Docusnap Enterprise Gateway. The simplest use case is to run the Discovery-DHCP.exe by double-clicking on the appropriate Windows server. The resulting output files can subsequently be imported into Docusnap365 via an import job.
