Requirements

How it works

The Docusnap Enterprise Gateway copies the Discovery-DNS.exe to the IPC$ share of the desired target systems during the discovery process. Once the copy process is successfully completed, the Docusnap Enterprise Gateway starts Discovery-DNS.exe on the target system. The data retrieval process is performed using PowerShell queries. The results are received by the Docusnap Enterprise Gateway via a stream, processed and transferred to the isolated storage.

Prerequisites

The following prerequisites must be met for the successful discovery of Microsoft DNS servers:

  • Accessibility of target systems
  • Administrative permissions
  • Access to the IPC$ share
  • PowerShell version 3.0 or higher
  • Windows Server 2012 or higher and DNS server PowerShell module

Accessibility of target systems

For interactive and scheduled discovery of Windows systems by Docusnap Enterprise Gateway, reachability of target systems is critical. Reachability means that the target system in the specified network can be accessed via TCP/IP. A check whether the target system can be reached via ICMPv4 echo request (ping) does not take place.

Administrative permissions

Member of the “Local Administrators” group or member of the “Domain Administrators” group

Accessing the IPC$ share

As described in the introduction, Discovery-DNS.exe is copied to the IPC$ share of the target system. For this operation, the user specified in the wizard must be either a member of the Local Administrators group or a member of the Domain Administrators group.

PowerShell version 3.0 or higher

The DNS server discovery is performed using the DNS Server PowerShell module. The minimum requirement for the PowerShell version is 3.0. This PowerShell version should already be present by default on servers suitable for this discovery.

Windows Server 2012 or later with DNS PowerShell module.

The DNS Server PowerShell module used for the discovery requires Windows Server 2012 or later. Windows Server 2008 R2 and older are not supported by Microsoft and thus DNS discovery is not suitable for these servers. The DNS Server PowerShell module can be installed via the Remote Server Administration Tools, Role Administration Tools, DNS Server Tools feature if required.
