Functionality
The “IP hosts” discovery module attempts to address all IPv4 addresses in the defined network area. If an IP address is identified as an active network subscriber, as much information as possible about this device is obtained with the aid of PCAP and stored as IP hosts. After successful transfer of IP host information from Docusnap Enterprise Gateway to Docusnap365, it is displayed in the list of IP hosts.
Prerequisites
The following prerequisites must be met for the successful discovery of IP hosts:
- Accessibility of IP hosts
- Optional: PCAP driver for improved identification and information retrieval
Reachability of IP hosts
For the interactive and scheduled discovery of IP hosts by the Docusnap Enterprise Gateway, the reachability of the target systems is crucial. Reachability means that the target system can be accessed on the specified network via TCP/IP. Additionally, it should be noted that when sending IP packets between different IP networks, important packet information is removed by a “router” such as MAC addresses. If the Docusnap Enterprise Gateway is not within the defined network range, this data is missing from the IP host.
Docusnap Enterprise Gateway with PCAP driver installed.
For data such as uptime or operating system information, the system on which the Docusnap Enterprise Gateway was installed requires a PCAP driver. This driver should already be present if the Docusnap Enterprise Gateway was installed with default settings. Basic IP host information is collected even without the PCAP driver installed.
