Best Practice: Initial Discovery
less than a minute
Introduction
The likelihood that all Windows systems will be accessible at the time of discovery is nearly impossible. Similarly, technical barriers, such as Windows systems in a demilitarized zone (DMZ) or sporadic use and subsequent shutdown of a Windows system, can prevent a successful discovery. These circumstances ultimately result in the required completeness not being achieved.
To achieve the best possible result with Docusnap365, the following procedure is recommended.
- Close-meshed time-controlled discovery over a limited period of time
- Time-controlled discovery of offline systems
- Use of the Discovery-Windows.exe
Scheduled discovery
- IP range
- Active Directory domain
Discovery of offline systems
When Windows systems are inventoried via “Windows (AD)”, the entirety of computer accounts from the Active Directory is used as the basis for the discovery job. If a system is not accessible at the time of discovery, it is stored in the discovery as an “offline system”.
