Discovery with Docusnap365

Structured discovery of the IT landscape in Docusnap365 – automated, package-based, and modular.

Introduction

Docusnap365 provides comprehensive, automated discovery of IT systems, platforms, and services. The collected data forms the foundation for documentation, analysis, permission audits, and compliance evaluations. All results are stored in the central Docusnap database and are available in a structured and systematic way.

Importance of Discovery in Docusnap365

Discovery is the basis for almost all other functions in Docusnap365:

  • Documentation: Discovered systems and services are automatically represented in diagrams, tables, and overviews.
  • Analysis: Whether it’s NTFS permissions or system dependencies – every evaluation relies on current, consistent data.
  • Business Assignment: Discovered objects can be linked to business processes, responsible persons, or applications.
  • Timeliness & Traceability: Regular scans ensure transparent and verifiable data.

Wizards

The Discovery section includes predefined wizards for various source systems. They are grouped into the following categories:

Systems

  • Windows (AD)
  • Windows (IP)
  • Linux
  • macOS
  • IP Hosts
  • SNMPv1 / SNMPv2
  • SNMPv3

Storage

  • HPE Storage

Services

  • Active Directory
  • Microsoft DNS
  • Microsoft DHCP
  • Microsoft DFS

Management Services

  • Microsoft 365
  • VMware
  • Hyper-V
  • Veeam Backup & Replication

Data

  • Microsoft SQL

Miscellaneous

  • File Import

The default view highlights preferred modules (e.g., Windows or AD). Under “More Modules”, the module selection can be customized — this also affects the modules shown on the dashboard.

Interactive Jobs

Interactive Jobs are manually triggered discovery operations. They are ideal for:

  • Ad-hoc discovery
  • Targeted checking of individual systems
  • Test runs for new configurations

Available functions:

  • New discovery (start scan)
  • Remove (delete job)

Scheduled Jobs

Scheduled Jobs enable automatic, time-controlled execution of discovery tasks. They are particularly suitable for regular system scans and long-term data maintenance.

Management functions:

  • Edit (e.g., time intervals or target systems)
  • Start immediately
  • Pause / Resume
  • Remove

Analysis Jobs (NTFS Analysis Only)

Analysis Jobs are specific to NTFS discovery. They help manage complex NTFS scans in a structured and repeatable way. Each analysis job targets one or more systems and can be linked to a specific analysis package.

Purpose and Function

  • Scheduled NTFS permission scans
  • Manage recurring scans tied to a package
  • Traceable history per analysis package

Analysis jobs are not intended for general discovery and are exclusive to the NTFS-specific analysis module in Docusnap365.

For more on package logic and analysis, see the NTFS Discovery chapter.

Summary

  • Docusnap365 performs automated and structured discovery of systems, services, and platforms.
  • There are interactive and scheduled jobs to control discovery.
  • Analysis jobs exist only within the NTFS permission analysis context.
  • Discovery data forms the foundation for documentation, analysis, and compliance in Docusnap365.
